ramsac Hybrid Cloud

A Hybrid Cloud solution, is one that uses both traditional ‘on premise’ servers for some applications, whilst hosting others off site in a secure data centre. Those servers could be your own servers that you store in a datacentre but that you personally own, or they could be virtual servers, hosted on the datacentre’s own infrastructure.

Typically organisations using a Hybrid Cloud solution will keep some servers on their own premises, for key applications, or applications that cannot be hosted, whilst using cloud based services for commodity applications such as email.

As an example, you may choose to have on site servers for your data storage, your accounts application and your key CRM databases, whilst accessing SharePoint, Email, Exchange and documents via the cloud.

The advantages of working in a Hybrid Cloud environment are:

  • Ability to simplify your existing server infrastructure
  • Reduction of capital/management costs
  • Enhanced functionality
  • Reduction in the number of servers kept on your own premises, which in turn reduces storage, cooling and energy costs
  • You can keep parts of your existing infrastructure as you require
  • Easy to implement alongside current setup
  • You are not dependent on the internet connection for access to those services still on premise

The disadvantages of working in a Hybrid Cloud environment are:

  • Does not provide full remote/mobile access for all users to all services
  • Requirement to continue managing back up on site
  • Dependent on sound internet connection for access to cloud based applications
  • On-going costs for datacentre rental

ramsac recommends Hybrid Cloud for:

  • Organisations who would like to retain some data/applications on site
  • Organisations who are looking to overhaul just part of their network infrastructure, rather than changing their entire system.
